SFAS Laboratories
The School of Food and Agricultural Sciences (SFAS) at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) operates a comprehensive network of modern laboratories that serve as the foundation for practical education, applied research, and industrial collaboration in the fields of Food Science and Technology (FST) and Human Nutrition and Dietetics (HND).
Each laboratory is equipped with specialized instruments and managed under a structured supervision system that ensures operational efficiency, safety, and adherence to quality standards.
Laboratory Management Framework
SFAS laboratories function under a defined hierarchy of Lab Heads and Equipment Supervision Teams, ensuring accountability, maintenance, and optimal utilization of all facilities and instruments.
- Lab Heads oversee cleanliness, inventory management, documentation, and overall laboratory operations
- Equipment Supervisors are responsible for routine maintenance, calibration, and training related to specific instruments
- Procurement and Compliance Coordination is managed by Lab Heads, ensuring smooth purchasing, inventory control, supplier liaison, and budget monitoring across all laboratories
Equipment Supervision and Faculty Responsibilities
Each major instrument within SFAS laboratories is assigned to designated faculty members responsible for:
- Conducting routine maintenance and ensuring safety compliance
- Performing calibration as per manufacturer protocols
- Providing training to students and faculty on proper operations
- Maintaining logbooks and records for calibration, maintenance, and usage
- Reporting malfunctions and coordinating repairs with the lab management team
- Assisting in installation, troubleshooting, and setup of new equipment
Safety, Quality, and Documentation
All SFAS laboratories adhere to institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols, emphasizing:
- Use of protective gear and hygiene practices
- Equipment calibration logs and preventive maintenance schedules
- Proper waste segregation and disposal in compliance with safety regulations
- Emergency response preparedness and regular safety audits
